Gluten Free Baked Bagel Chips

I am the mom of three teenagers…all boys…with big appetites!  I am forever amazed by their voracious appetites.  No sooner is lunch finished then someone is asking me if there is anything in the house to eat!  They never seem to stop.

Thankfully, the boys are active and conscious of eating well.  They don’t fill up on junk and aren’t scared of vegetables or all things healthy.   This I am very thankful for!

While I don’t seem to have difficulty making healthy meals for my family, snacking seems to be a bit more challenging.  I always make sure that we have lots of fresh fruit, nuts, nut butters, cheese, and yogurt on hand for snacking, but sometimes the guys just want something with a bit of a crunch to it (who can blame them, right?).

Sometimes I do pick up tortilla chips and salsa for them, but last week I had the hankering to create something different:  Bagel Chips.

As a child one of my favorite treats were bagel chips.  On occasion my mother would pick up a bag, and when she did, my brother and I would dig in!  They came in so many varieties, but my favorite was the garlic.  They had just the right amount of garlic flavor mingled with the perfect hit of sea salt.  They were simple but oh so good.

Making your own bagel chips is also pretty simple to pull off.

It all starts with selecting your favorite gluten free bagels.  Opt for a flavored version such as Everything or Cinnamon Raisin.  There will be little else you need to add in order to get flavorful, tasty chips.

These gluten free bagel chips make for the perfect snack and are delicious when paired with a homemade dip.

I hope you’ll give them a try!

Gluten Free Baked Bagel Chips

4 gluten free bagels, variety of choice, but I recommend Everything
All natural cooking spray (I used Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Spray)
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper (if desired)

Other add-on options:  garlic powder, onion powder, taco seasoning, etc…

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.

Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

Using a sharp knife, thinly slice each bagel into rounds.  I was able to cut 4-6 slices per bagel depending on size.

Arrange the slices onto the baking sheet in one single layer.  Some overlapping is fine.  Avoid creating 2+ layers of bagel rounds.  Opt for a second baking sheet instead of crowding the slices together.  If the slices are overly layered or too crowded, the chips will not crisp up.

Spray the tops of the bagel rounds with a generous amount of cooking spray.  Opt for a healthy, all natural spray free of accelerates and chemicals.  Flip the the bagel rounds over and spray the second side with cooking spray.  Lightly sprinkle the tops with sea salt and pepper (if desired).

Bake for 15 minutes.  Remove the tray from the oven and flip the rounds over.  Return the tray to the oven and bake for 10-15 additional minutes.

At this point in the baking process you will need to monitor your baking sheets often.  Thinner slices tend to brown and crisp quicker than do thicker slices.  Remove crisped rounds to prevent burning.

Transfer the crisped rounds to a cooling rack and allow to cool completely.

That’s it!  What you are left with is a crunchy and delicious snack that I guarantee you’ll be making again!
